Research & Planning 2: Music Video Theory Research (Applying Goodwin's music video Analysis)

I conducted some research on common themes and ideals that are in music videos for the up and coming one my group will be making and I came across Goodwin's Music video analysis and these were the frequent 5 pointers that were covered:

1.The music videos demonstrate genre characteristics for example a stage performance in a metal video.
 

 2. There s a relationship between lyrics and visuals (Illustrative perhaps the acting is reflecting the lyrics sung in i.e a love song)


3. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artists and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)



4. There is frequently references to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. (the camera simply cuts up the women into parts and the male views can gain pleasure from that 'male gaze')

Some could say that female artists could gain superiority from that and use it to their advantage with their mv's like above with "beyonces' who run the world."


5. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc kill bill ref to bruce lee in film of death, taylor swift bad blood)

What I've learnt from this:
As you can see from my post that one common artists seems to be using these conventions consistently and that is Beyonce and what I believe to be a key common contributor to her success is the way in which her music videos stick to these ideas yet still provide a way for her to demonstrate her musicality within her music videos Even in her most outstanding music videos these conventions are held yet we are still able to perceive it as a 'Beyonce music video' And I plan to keep this theory in mind when I plan our music video with my group and try to focus as much on the artist as well as any storytelling that will take place within the music video so that it doesn't stray from present our artist in its own theme.
